For 30 years Frank McCourt taught high school English in New York City and for much of that time he considered himself a fraud. During these years he danced a delicate jig between engaging the students, satisfying often bewildered administrators and parents, and actually enjoying his job. He tried to present a consistent image of composure and self-confidence, yet he regularly felt insecure, inadequate, and unfocused. After much trial and error, he eventually discovered what was in front of him (or rather, behind him) all along--his own experience. "My life saved my life," he writes. "My students didn't know there was a man up there escaping a cocoon of Irish history and Catholicism, leaving bits of that cocoon everywhere." At the beginning of his career it had never occurred to him that his own dismal upbringing in the slums of Limerick could be turned into a valuable lesson plan. Indeed, his formal training emphasized the opposite. Principals and department heads lectured him to never share anything personal. He was instructed to arouse fear and awe, to be stern, to be impossible to please--but he couldn't do it. McCourt was too likable, too interested in the students' lives, and too willing to reveal himself for their benefit as well as his own. He was a kindred spirit with more questions than answers: "Look at me: wandering late bloomer, floundering old fart, discovering in my forties what my students knew in their teens."

As he did so adroitly in his previous memoirs, Angela's Ashes and 'Tis, McCourt manages to uncover humor in nearly everything. He writes about hilarious misfires, as when he suggested (during his teacher's exam) that the students write a suicide note, as well as unorthodox assignments that turned into epiphanies for both teacher and students. A dazzling writer with a unique and compelling voice, McCourt describes the dignity and difficulties of a largely thankless profession with incisive, self-deprecating wit and uncommon perception. Starred Review. This final memoir in the trilogy that started with Angela's Ashes and continued in 'Tis focuses almost exclusively on McCourt's 30-year teaching career in New York City's public high schools, which began at McKee Vocational and Technical in 1958. His first day in class, a fight broke out and a sandwich was hurled in anger. McCourt immediately picked it up and ate it. On the second day of class, McCourt's retort about the Irish and their sheep brought the wrath of the principal down on him. All McCourt wanted to do was teach, which wasn't easy in the jumbled bureaucracy of the New York City school system. Pretty soon he realized the system wasn't run by teachers but by sterile functionaries. "I was uncomfortable with the bureaucrats, the higher-ups, who had escaped classrooms only to turn and bother the occupants of those classrooms, teachers and students. I never wanted to fill out their forms, follow their guidelines, administer their examinations, tolerate their snooping, adjust myself to their programs and courses of study." As McCourt matured in his job, he found ingenious ways to motivate the kids: have them write "excuse notes" from Adam and Eve to God; use parts of a pen to define parts of a sentence; use cookbook recipes to get the students to think creatively. A particularly warming and enlightening lesson concerns a class of black girls at Seward Park High School who felt slighted when they were not invited to see a performance of Hamlet, and how they taught McCourt never to have diminished expectations about any of his students. McCourt throws down the gauntlet on education, asserting that teaching is more than achieving high test scores. It's about educating, about forming intellects, about getting people to think. McCourt's many fans will of course love this book, but it also should be mandatory reading for every teacher in America. And it wouldn't hurt some politicians to read it, too. (Nov. 15)

The pathos McCourt created in his first two memoirs just may be wearing thin. While some critics thought Teacher Man focused, fresh, and exciting, others saw a self-deprecating author at work, his prose littered with clichés. No doubt Teacher Man is darkly entertaining: what other teacher during class would ask children to write suicide notes or describe their own murderous thoughts? But too many anecdotes about McCourt’s childhood, sexual adventures, and marriage (all found in his previous books) often disembody his poignant, life-learning teaching experiences from their context. Still, the memoir rings true for teachers in its depictions of daily classroom trials, and McCourt’s honesty and storytelling gifts remain unsurpassed.

Five Stars required reading

Best book on teaching ever written Should be written by would be teachers a nd all teachers.Because of his background Frank has cut through the hype that both he and I had to suffer through, on our way at teacher training.I am a retired teacher[after 43 years.Franks point about getting the students is the main thrust of the book.All the texts and discussions on teaching is useless unless you have their attention.Its very interesting that through the use of discarded students excuses, he was able to get them interested in writing.A must read for all teachers.I was born and went to school in Ireland, and I have somewhat stories that Frank wrote and discussed.I used stories ov er and over as I discussed certain topics. This book is a classic.In the first line. Best book on teaching should be read instead of written I also agree with Frank that through teaching, a teacher really understands himself better and he becomesbetter able to help students

Felt Incomplete

This is the third of Frank McCourt's memoir trilogy which followed up his Pulitzer Prize winning debut "Angela's Ashes" and 'Tis. This deals with Frank McCourt's teaching career in New York City. I did enjoy witty and self depreciating style of writing. I was a little disappointed that even though he dives deep into his teaching career we learn little of his personal life. I would have been interested in his relationships with his wives/children and his brother (and author also Malachy McCourt). I think this would have painted a broader picture of his life and how it influenced his teaching style. I'd only read it if you've read his first two books and wish finish the trilogy plus I think it would more sense to have the back story of the other two. Too bad he hadn't written more as I think his style is entertaining and insightful.

A teacher and writer born to be both.

Frank McCourt had writing in his veins lacing his blood. Coming late to education, it's obvious this skill was innate. Certainly his powers of observation as a child were astonishing. I loved his book Angela's Ashes telling about his deprived but vibrant childhood. Frank McCourt had many difficulties to surmount but he never lost his sense of humor.
In Teacher Man he tells of his years in a New York City school teaching English to kids who can't have known how privileged they were, but couldn't fail to love him. They were challenging. He reached them on their level in a way few adults, certainly very few in authority, could emulate. His modesty and humor were his attraction. He subtly urged, inspired, provoked his pupils to explore the world of ideas - that's education. His understanding of young people made his career as a teacher a gift to a generation, although we cannot help wishing he had started writing sooner. On retirement one of his pupils (a discerning wise man in the making) called out a fond goodbye and added, 'Hey, Mr. McCourt, you should write a book.' I wept at some passages and laughed aloud at others. I gave it to My Son the Teacher for Christmas. Anyone would enjoy it.

Must Read for any Film Student

Jay's book is a must read for any student of cinematography looking to deepen their understanding of the craft. Jay has the ability to take complex concepts and to break them into easily digestible examples and references written in a very easy to understand style. I use both of Jay's books as reference texts in courses I teach in cinematography for that very reason. The chapters he has written on Optics are an amazing resource on a topic seldom explored in cinematography text in great detail. I also love that the book touch on practical exercises like tying knots that every filmmaker can use. The book is littered with great illustrations, charts, and photos that really add value to the content. I highly recommend Behind the Lens!

AMAZING RESOURCE!

Jay is the best teacher in these subjects I have had the pleasure to read and talk to!
His extensive experience and research is absolutely incredible and the fact that he writes these books to share his knowledge in such a simplified way that can get through practically anyone is even more admirable. After reading his first book, he now unconditionally has me recommending his literature (including articles on several very recognized film magazines) to all cinematography students I have taught and worked with.
I cant recommend this piece enough, I actually now carry it in my bag every time I go on set as a great resource for creative approaches as much as a technical guide.
You wont regret buying this one and reading it over and over! Great investment!

This is a translation of a historically important Bengali novel. Published in 1882, Chatterji's Anandamath helped create the atmosphere and the symbolism for the nationalist movement leading to Indian independence in 1947. It contains the famous hymn Vande Mataram ("I revere the Mother"), which has become India's official National Song. Set in Bengal at the time of the famine of 1770, the novel reflects tensions and oppositions within Indian culture between Hindus and Muslims, ruler and ruled, indigenous people and foreign overlords, jungle and town, Aryan and non-Aryan, celibacy and sexuality. It is both a political and a religious work. By recreating the past of Bengal, Chatterji hoped to create a new present that involved a new interpretation of the past. Julius Lipner not only provides the first complete and satisfactory English translation of this important work, but supplies an extensive Introduction contextualizing the novel and its cultural and political history. Also included are notes offering the Bengali or Sanskrit terms for certain words, as well as explanatory notes for the specialized lay reader or scholar.

Everyone had a positive response to the book. Book Club members had different translations so we were able to compare translations. Style was an interesting combination of narrative; political, ethnic, and religious views of 19th century Bengal was new information for all of us and we found it interesting how we each focused on different elements of Bankim's writings. If you are interested in trying to understand the history of the Indian sub-continent during the British administration, this is a good place to start.

Excellent contextualization of an historically important novel

Those who have done a decent amount of reading on the subject of Hindu nationalism in India have very likely heard of Bankimchandra Chatterji's novel, Anandamath. This 19th century novel greatly influenced the Hindu revivalist and anti-colonial movement, which sought to rid India of British rule and, in its more extreme form, "reclaim" India for the Hindus and to subordinate the Muslim population. It is odd that, given its importance, Julius Lipner's is the first book in a century to critically examine the novel and translate it into English. As Lipner points out, from a literary standpoint, Chatterji's novel is nothing special--hence only a 4-star rating. The novel itself is a quick read, often boring, with (in my opinion) no real memorable characters, no capturing prose (except for the song "Bande Mataram," which became a second national anthem of sorts after India's independence), etc. It was able to capture a great many readers through it's overall message of India's "decline" and Hinduism's "degeneration" during the period of Mughal rule. This message has led to both great praise and bilious criticism of the novel, and it is to this topic that Lipner's particular volume offers great insight.

Lipner writes a 100+ page introduction about the life, times, and writing of Bankimchandra Chatterji. It is both very readable and extremely informative. It discusses his upbringing and schooling in both Sanskritic and English-medium schools (which profoundly affected his outlook), his early career and writings, the historical setting of the major events of Anandamath (the book is largely about a group of Hindu ascetics who go about attacking Muslims, and is supposedly based on the 18th-century Sannyasi Rebellion that took place in Bengal), and other topics relevant to this seminal work. The author analyzes many of Chatterji's other writings and correspondances, and tackles questions of historical relevance: Was Anandamath truly based on the Sannyasi Rebellion? Was Chatterji truly anti-Muslim, and/or was he a Hindu fundamentalist? Was Chatterji favorable towards British rule, if it meant at least getting rid of Muslim rule? What censorship problems did Chatterji encounter when publishing Anandamath, how did they affect his writing, and what does it all mean? The analysis of these and many other important questions greatly contextualizes Chatterji's novel, and this work is absolutely essential to understanding how one novel had such a profound affect on the Indian nationalist movement, and what the author's true intentions may have been. Lipner even re-translates the title from its original "Abbey of Bliss" to "The Sacred Brotherhood," examining the language, events, and themes of the novel and the time in which it was written, concluding that there is nothing "blissful" about this novel and therefore the longstanding English translation of the title is incorrect. I cannot recommend this book enough, especially to specialists of Indian history and literature.

Telling the story through characters like the French mogul Bernard Arnault, she details how the perfection of old-time manufacturing, still seen in Hermès handbags, has bowed to sweatshops and wild profits on mediocre merchandise. After a brisk history of luxury, Thomas shows why handbags and perfume are as susceptible to globalization and corporate greed as less rarefied industries. She follows the overarching story, parts of which are familiar, from boardrooms to street markets that unload millions in counterfeit goods, dropping irresistible details like a Japanese monk obsessed with Comme des Garçons. But she's no killjoy. If anything, she's fond of the aristocratic past, snarks at "behemoths that churn out perfume like Kraft makes cheese" and is too credulous of fashionistas' towering egos. Despite her grasp of business machinations, her argument that conglomerates have stolen luxury's soul doesn't entirely wash. As her tales of quotidian vs. ultra luxury make clear, the rich and chic can still distinguish themselves, even when Las Vegas hosts the world's ritziest brands. Thomas might have delved deeper into why fashion labels inspire such mania, beyond "selling dreams," but her curiosity is contagious. (Aug.)

She gives us some sharply observed profiles of figures like Miuccia Prada, who was a Communist with a doctorate in political science when she took over her familys small luxury goods business in 1978, and the business tycoon Bernard Arnault, who relentlessly built LVMH into a luxury monolith with dozens of brands (including Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Dior)sold around the world.

WANT to buy luxury products like Louis Vuitton handbags? Gucci shoes? Prada dresses? Theres no need to comb the fashion alleys of New York, Paris or Milan in search of the brands boutique stores. Just zip over to the nearest mall, where high-end department stores hawk luggage, footwear, apparel, jewelry and virtually every other designer-label item that ever appeared under the klieg lights.
But be prepared to see scores of fellow shoppers already wearing the exact goods you covet.
Therein lies the cruel commercial irony at the core of Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster, by Dana Thomas, a Paris-based culture and fashion writer for Newsweek (Penguin Press, 375 pages, $27.95).
Ms. Thomas documents in entertaining and sometimes heart-wrenching detail how the luxury industry evolved from a proudly diverse array of family-owned houses into a $157 billion-a-year mass market whose products now lack the exclusivity and in many cases the quality craftsmanship that formed the basis for their cachet in the first place.
Along with changing the way we dress, the luxury industry has realigned our economic class system, Ms. Thomas asserts. It has changed the way we interact, she says. At first lip-blush, that might seem like merely an elitist complaint. Ms. Thomas shows, however, that the repercussions of democratizing luxury have had dire effects across the globe, and on almost every socio-economic level.
The corporate quest to reduce operating costs, for example, often leads to the creation of sweatshops. Along the way come an array of related crimes ranging from fraudulent labeling and counterfeiting to embezzlement and even prostitution paid for with luxury goods in lieu of cash.
If the corporatization of luxury is new, the flaunting of wealth through acquisitions is not: It dates at least as far back as the ancient Greeks and Etruscans. The ancestry of modern extravagance traces to the Bourbons and the Bonapartes. (After France earned $15 million selling hundreds of millions of acres to the United States, Napoleons wife, Josephine, spent half of the money on clothes in 10 years, Ms. Thomas reports.)
Ms. Thomas argues that luxury not only indicates our tastes in fashion, it also defines our political, social, and economic standing and our self-worth. In America, the prevailing standards of taste and style were once set by new rich industrialists like the Vanderbilts, Carnegies, Morgans and Rockefellers.
Luxury wasnt simply a product, Ms. Thomas writes. It denoted a history of tradition, superior quality, and often a pampered buying experience.
Luxury was a natural and expected element of upper-class life, like belonging to the right clubs or having the right surname. And it was produced in small quantities often made to order for an extremely limited and truly elite clientele.
Enter the villains of Ms. Thomas book, the 35 leading luxury brands that now control over 60 percent of the global market. The list includes Prada, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Herms and Chanel, all of which have revenue in excess of $1 billion a year. But the Mr. Big of the big luxury is LVMH Mot Hennessy Louis Vuitton, an $11 billion conglomerate whose labels also include Dior, Fendi and Berluti.
Some of the best-written and most damning passages in Deluxe recount the rise of LVMHs chairman, Bernard Arnault, considered by his critics to be the Machiavelli of luxury industry finance. If anyone finds out about me...

at corporate I would get a little slap on the wrist for writing this review since I work for one the brands heavily mentioned in this wonderful book.

I entered the world of luxury goods last year for an Italian brand that even it's "epicenter" store is elusive without the name of the store on Rodeo Drive. What Dana Thomas has written about the luxury brands is eye opening and condemning. From the factories in China, Santee Alley in the Downtown Los Angeles and the country side of France, you get the insiders view on how indeed luxury lost its luster. Once considered lavish and extravagant, we now see what luxury brands have done to diminish the quality and service of these high end stores and at great cost. No one walks into Gucci and buys a $2000 handbag expecting it to be made by an under paid teenager in China only to have the tag changed once it is in the companies possession to "made in Italy" for adding a handle. Small couture brands exist that retain a sense of dignity by continuing the art of exclusivity, style and hand made products that are still created and made where the tag states they're from. Even Hermes, a brand that continues to grow steadily, has retained its heritage and luxe by hand making made to order handbags and saddles.

Aside from the investigative interviews and reports on luxury's current state, you also get history lessons on the birth of luxury from Alexander the Great's wardrobe, how Chanel No 5 came to be and the creation of the "Birkin" bag for Jane Birkin by Hermes. Witty, insightful and damning, you can't help but feel drawn into this book hoping that it never ends. But all good things come to an end and what I was left with was a sense of doubt and a bit of anger. As I stand in floor full of runway dresses, shoes and bags I wonder how much are these really worth? When a client complains in the future about her bag falling apart in a few days and asks, "What are your bags made in China?" in the back of my mind I will think yes it indeed could have been made in China.

Methodically researched/ Beautifully written

Full Disclosure: I write about fashion, entertainment and celebrities for a living and have known Dana Thomas for a decade or more. I knew she was working on a book about luxury (yawn) and for the past three years, she was always exhausted, trotting off to China, Milan, Grasse or Lake Como, sometimes popping into my hood in Hollywood, constantly doing research for the book.

But frankly, I'm not a big designer brand buyer and would sooner plunk $400 on a Pottery Barn couch than a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes. So I never imagined how engrossed i would be by this book. In fact, I was shocked.

Dana makes this elitist world come alive by putting luxury in a historical context (Caesar wore only silk togas and the Senate was POed at the expense!) and taking the reader with her on a personal journey behind the scenes and around the world, to find out the sad truth about the decline of the luxury goods industry.

It's utterly fascinating and engrossing. And it's funny! Dana has a wicked snse of humor and pulls no punches in describing the decadent denizens of the "Deluxe" world. Even if you know nothing about fashion, couldn't tell a Gucci bag from a Prada purse, and don't own a single designer knockoff product, this book will fascinate, educate and entertain. Plus any book that can make me put down the last Harry Potter - in the middle! - has to be some kind of good read.

Interesting stories behind some well known brands

Enjoyable stroll through the good and the bad of luxury. Overall, it seems like the author lost some direction when writing this book: it starts out somewhat critical of the current trend in luxury industry and then it goes on to say it's actually not so bad and ending with a promise of a bright (if somewhat different) future. Either way, read it for some insight into how high end brands do their thing.

This book is the best book ever !!! All the topics that I've been looking fo rin telemetry has its own chapter...you could easily understand it especially the AV Dissociation. I even tell my friends that I ordered it in amazon ...thanks amazon!
