"Imagine what your life would be like if you could simply 'choose' to have a good day. Webb makes a powerful case that we can. Best of all, she shows us how. Webb gets her arms around the vast body of information coming at us from behavioral economics, psychology, and neuroscience, and distills the best of it into the kind of practical advice a wise friend might offer. It's the book Daniel Kahneman might write if he'd been working in the business world for twenty years. Masterful."
—Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen, co-authors of the bestselling Difficult Conversations and Thanks for the Feedback

"This is a brilliantly useful book. Caroline Webb has a quite exceptional range of organisational experience. She uses it to review a vast span of the latest academic 'thinking about thinking' in the clearest possible way. And then she applies this wisdom to help us all sort out the frazzle of our own working day. Her approach is utterly straightforward but based in deep insights into how human beings really behave."
—Peter Day, BBC Business Correspondent, Presenter of In Business and Global Business

“Years ago I was a rower, and in sport everyone knows you need to pay attention to yourself, your intent and your mindset, to be at your best. This book reminded me of all I learned from those days about the importance of having the right attitude. I found it a great, practical guide to applying these and other helpful psychological insights in business – something we do all too infrequently. Built solidly on the latest research, brought to life with storytelling, it offers many simple ways to boost your performance and give you a better day at work – and if you’re a leader, it will show you how to make sure that your colleagues are on top form, too."
-—Matt Brittin, President of Google Europe, Middle East & Africa, former rowing World Championship medalist and British Olympic team member

"How to Have a Good Day speaks to every area of your workday and shows how making a few critical adjustments to your everyday behavior will leave you amazed by the results. By applying the lessons in Webb's book, all based on science, you’ll maximize your performance and be more energized than ever."
— Marshall Goldsmith, bestselling author of Triggers, MOJO and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

“An absolute must read for the millions of people struggling to overcome the challenges and stresses of work and family life. Caroline Webb’s deep dive into ground-breaking new behavioral and neuroscience research gives us the tools to empower everyone to have a better, more fulfilling day, every day. Finally, we can say, ‘Good morning,’ and mean it!”
—Linda Kaplan Thaler, Chairman of Publicis Kaplan Thaler and co-author of Grit to Great

“The quest for self-improvement usually takes place on a well-trodden path, with many different gurus offering guidance. But the advice, in addition to being contradictory, often lacks solid foundations. Fortunately, How to Have a Good Day is the breakout exception to this category. The evidence and examples packed inside its pages leave the reader in no doubt that Webb's advice will make a real difference.  Better days lead to better lives, and this extraordinary book will lead to both.”
—Chris Guillebeau, New York Times bestselling author of The $100 Startup and The Happiness of Pursuit

“In How to Have a Good Day, Caroline Webb offers practical advice rooted in the latest science and psychology for anyone who wants to take a more intentional approach to life and enjoy the greater productivity and success that comes from doing so. The everyday epiphany.
By timothy d fisher
For those of us without the time, means, or gumption to hire a career/life coach, there is help. Profound, tangible, and accessible help from this book. And blessedly, it requires little heavy lifting on our part. It turns out, the ways we get in our own way, the procrastinating, time-wasting, goal-sabotaging, can be squelched. While we’ve been suffering, a small army of academics has been figuring stuff out. It might in how our brains function, our evolutionary tendencies, or the habits (good or bad) we pick up.

To be clear on what “How to Have a Good Day” is not: it requires no deep plumbing of the psyche, it pushes no “alternative” way of thinking. The topics are well known. We all know procrastination is bad, we may know multi-tasking is a fallacy. But why? And what can I do about it today? The author, professional career coach, researcher, and reader of 600(!) books on the topic of behavioral science, has distilled the best, most illuminating discoveries to help those of us who know better, but can’t do better. As declared in the title, yes, there is a measure of science-talk, but this is no science text. HTHAGD kicks off with an introductory primer on the concepts in play. Yet rest assured any haughty terminology has been thoroughly humanized, without being cerebrally neutered. Though even the author allows the book is navigable even if you skip chapter one.

The remaining chapters drill down on seven topics, such as productivity, resilience, etc. Each topic is loosely pegged to a real individual’s overcoming of their respective obstacle (e.g. priorities). Webb threads in the most revelatory science and explains why this subject’s course of action worked. She then details the actionable things we can do (a specific breathing technique, a check-list, a mantra, and so on) to bring into our day. All the “tips” are packaged at the end of the chapter. So indeed, the book is built to be revisited by topic, say, two years from now on your worst day ever at work.

An exhaustively comprehensive Rx for our everyday challenges. At once probing of our mental innards, and plainly, wonderfully practical. We know it does us no good to have another wasted day. With this book, we need no longer search in anguish for what to do about it. Fantastically beneficial from the first sit-down.

Extremely useful to everyone
By Neal Reynolds
I suggest that, whatever your work situation, you read Caroline Webb's book thoroughly and then leave it on a table where you can pick it up and review some of the material in it at any time. The 21 chapters are divided into seven parts: PRIORITIES--Setting Intentional Direction and Focus for Your Day; PRODUCTIVITY--Making the Hours in Your Day Go Further; RELATIONSHIPS--Making the Most of Every Interaction; THINKING--Being Your Smartest, Wisest, Most Creative Self; INFLUENCE--Maximizing the Impact of All You Say and Do; RESILIENCE--Sailing Through Setbacks and Annoyances; ENERGY--Boosting Your Enthusiasm and Enjoyment. All this is prefaced by an introduction giving us THE SCIENCE ESSENTIALS. Then there's a postscript: Making It Stick, and three appendixes: A--How to Be Good at Meetings; B--How To Be Good at Email, and C--Reinvigorating your Routine. Plus there's Suggested Further Reading, a helpful Glossary, and Notes.

The book as a whole is more applicable to those in desk and managerial jobs, but the key points can be adapted by, for instance, dishwashers, mail carriers, security officers, whatever. Actually, even a retired person such as myself will find a lot of useful material here.In fact, I would think even high school and especially college students would find a lot of food for thought here.

The writing is fairly informal, person to person. It's quite easy to read and learn from. I earnestly recommend this to just about everyone.

Wow. Absolutely packed with good info.

Caroline Webb has managed to write a heavily researched, evidence-based manual that can be helpful to just about anyone. Which probably makes it sound horribly boring, but it really isn't!

Most of the book is written for people who work--at the top or the bottom of the food chain, it doesn't matter. But even I, as a stay-at-home mom and writer, found plenty in here to apply to my life. Webb's tone is very conversational, and while the content is dense, she manages to inject levity and humor often enough that I never felt bogged down.

The book is divided into seven parts. In a nutshell, these parts address:

1) Setting your intentions
2) Organizing your self and your life in a more strategic way
3) Making the most of your relationships (this is BY FAR my favorite section, holy smokes)
4) Being your best, most insightful self
5) Maximizing your impact
6) Increasing your resilience
7) Boosting your energy.

As I mentioned, my favorite section, hands down, is the section about building relationships. I thought Webb offered so much good stuff here, I was blown away. Some of my favorite insights from Webb:

(*) Nobody ever experiences an entirely objective version of reality (and this is what leads to misunderstanding). This may seem like an obvious point, but the scientific explanation behind this is fascinating.
(*) Webb's advice on how to give a "positive no" (basically delivering disappointing information with positivity and warmth) is life-changing, in my opinion. I've already put this one into practice and seen great results.
(*) Along the same lines, I also love Webb's strategies for diffusing tense situations and delivering difficult information with kindness, clarity, and tact.

And even still, there is so much more to this book. How to Have a Good Day offers plenty of helpful insight into the nature of human interaction and the science behind why we act the way that we do, that I really believe there is something in here for everyone. It's not a book to rush through, so take your time with it. It will be worth the effort.

Also, if you do enjoy this book, I'd also recommend Unfinished Business: Women Men Work Family.

Best Beekeeping Book
By Kiko
This is probably the 8th book on Beekeeping that I've either purchased or borrowoed; and I love it!

It truly is a tome; it's about 2.5 inches thick, heavy as a brick, and is chock full of endless information. I will admit that I haven't read it cover-to-cover; instead, I've enjoyed going to the Table of Contents, choosing the topic I wanted to read, and flipping through to read the information. Since that's how I use it, I can tell you with certainty that it's organized well. Whether it is bees in mythology, honey and bee products, recipes, or practical beekeeping, what you're looking for is easy to find and well laid-out. It is really thoughtfully organized once you're bee-deep in the chapters as well.

The photos are fantastic...a queen hatching?! Incredible! I especially loved the several pages illustrating seasonal blooming plants for bees (helpful for this former city girl that can't identify a palm tree from a maple!). That helped me identify a late-season pollen source for one of my hives. There are also photos of various shades of honey, charts that describe the various honeys' country of origin, name, color, flavor, etc. Each type of honeybee is illustrated and has its own page, dedicated to its traits, geographical origins, behavior patterns and more. It sounds academic in a review, but in this book, it's captivating!

I would recommend this book for anyone from a "newbee" to an experienced beekeeper, to anyone interested in cooking with and making cosmetics with honey. Even if you don't keep bees, but just love them, it's an excellent read.

My one and only gripe? It's printed and bound in China. BOO.

Beautiful book but missing current and updated methods
By Neologian
This is a beautiful book on beekeeping and a hefty tome that's a pleasure to hold. Full of informative history, great photography, heavy paper stock, quality binding, and rife with a fairly complete overview of standard practice beekeeping methodology of the last 50+ years. And therein lays the problem.

There is virtually no mention at all of top bar hives or the growing interest in balanced and natural beekeeping methods aimed at encouraging self-sustaining hives. Given the current state of affairs in the beekeeping world, this is a somewhat unforgivable oversight for a book with a publish date as recent at 2011.

Instead what we have is a book that focuses almost entirely on the highly interventionist beekeeping methods developed by commercial beekeepers over the last 50 to 100 years. Methods which many beekeepers are now beginning to suspect are contributing to the diminished capacity of bees to be naturally self-sustaining in the absence of persistent human interventions. They are the methods established, and now sadly accepted as standard practice, by production-focused commercial beekeepers and oriented toward a single purpose.....high honey yields. This means intensive "management" of the bees inhibiting any number of natural behaviors to induce greater honey production. They include routine refined sugar feedings, application and use of synthetic and highly potent medications to control pests and viruses, queen manipulation including artificial insemination & frequent replacement, drone and swarm suppression by the excision of drone and queen cells (or by colony splitting). They are methods which are increasingly becoming associated with fumigants, antibiotics, chemical repellents, plastic parts, artificially contrived cell structures, expensive specialty equipment, corn sugar and soy based "feeds", and frequent seasonal hive replenishment via an increasingly precarious mail-order-bee industry in which bees are transported from distant geographic locations.

Sadly, there is virtually no mention of any of the newer (older actually) beekeeping practices which are gaining favor and showing at least the promise of greater self-sustainability in recent years. These new methods are less equipment dependent and based on a different ethos with bee welfare and hive self-sustainability as the primary goals. The harvesting of hive "products" run a distant second and are regarded as only a fortunate, but not guaranteed, byproduct. It's an approach to beekeeping that seeks to facilitate, rather than inhibit and retard, the natural inclination of the bees, involves a highly restrained harvesting of hive products, and seeks minimal dependence if not complete independence from potent synthetic chemical treatments. Priority one is the natural viability of the bees and the establishment of hives that do not require frequent and persistent human intervention. If that means less honey then so be it.

As beautiful as the book is (and it is) it's a bit like reading a book that touts itself as the definitive "Bible" on forest & land management which ONLY discusses the practice of industrial clear cutting while completely ignoring selective harvesting, dispersed cut blocks, longer green up periods, and any number of increasingly accepted forest management practices aimed at improved sustainability.

Sadly this is all too common. All to often even backyard beekeepers are taught to ape the practices of high yield, commercially oriented beekeepers even though they may have radically different goals and objectives in mind. And in any event, consider where those commercial practices have brought the bees. Wild populations all but gone and commercial populations all but halved in the last 30-40 years. Yes, external factors such as mites and other disease play a part here, but these too are the result of non-native pests being introduced into non-resistant populations as the result of heavy commercial trafficking of bees across otherwise natural boundaries.

I'd have loved to give this beautiful book 5 stars but any "Bible" on beekeeping has to include these now pressing considerations and at least minimally recognize that when one finds oneself in a hole....it's time to stop digging. Same practices beget same results. New ideas, and new methods based on new priorities exist and should be given at least some small amount of coverage.

Perhaps in the second edition......provided there are still bees to keep.

A beekeeper's MUST have book
By H. Erickson
My husband and I were lucky enough to capture and hive a swarm this spring, launching us unexpectedly into beekeeping. My sister has kept bees, and we'd always thought of doing it, but to "bee" (sorry, I have a problem with bee puns) thrust into it so suddenly meant we had a lot to learn, and very fast.

We immediately started learning all we could about beekeeping and how to keep our bees happy and healthy. We rented all the books we could find on bees (yes, even children's books) from our library. When we finally rented The Beekeeper's Bible, however, we knew we had found something special. We knew we couldn't just read this one, and return it to the library. Oh no, this one had to become a part of our own library. We bought it right away.

I'll start with the superficial: this book is beautiful. The cover is old fashioned, delightful, and charming artwork. This is no lightweight, either. When they call this book a "bible", it's because it literally is bible-sized. Heavy, thick, complete. It would do some serious damage if you threw this book at someone! Inside the covers, it's just as impressive. The pages are glossy, color printed with photos and images on nearly every page. Those who like their picture books will love this one, but there is plenty of literature here to give you quite the education.

That's where I'll go next, the information. This book is rich and complete on all things bees, truly a wealth of information. From the history of beekeeping, to the breeds, styles of hives, and a million other things to learn to the honey recipes, crafts, and then some. This thick book is chock full of information. Those who are actually apiarists (beekeepers) will have the necessary information at their fingertips, but this book would also be a fascinating read for those who've never kept bees and never will. (Although don't be surprised if, after flipping through some of it's pages, if you suddenly want to keep bees, too!) It's true, honeybees are absolutely fascinating creatures, there is a great deal to be learned here.

If you keep bees, or plan to, I tell you: you MUST own this book. If you are simply interested in learning more: definitely read this book. If you're looking for a gift for someone who enjoys homesteading, farming, keeping chickens, etc: this will make the perfect gift. This is one book that can't just be returned to the library, it had to be added to our collection.

Review
Meeting Dr. Jamie Koufman completely changed my life. My symptoms of chronic cough and shortness of breath had been diagnosed since my childhood as asthma. Dr. Koufman identified that I had reflux, not asthma, and guided me step by step how to cure it. I have my life back and I owe it all to Dr. Koufman's insight and help. -Suze Orman, Host of the Suze Orman Show, CNBC

From the Inside Flap
An estimated 100 million Americans suffer from "acid reflux." Incredibly, nearly half of them don't know they have it.

Over the past few decades, reflux has become one of the most widespread and misunderstood, yet potentially preventable, diseases of Western civilization. It can cause untold damage to your health and pave the way for serious diseases such as esophageal cancer, currently the fastest growing cancer in the United States. Reflux was once thought of as a disease that struck only the middle-aged and older, but its victims today are as likely to be in their 20s and 30s. Its symptoms go beyond the heartburn and indigestion of yesterday to include hoarseness, chronic cough, asthma, trouble swallowing, even sinus conditions.

Why the sudden shift? As you will learn in DROPPING ACID: The Reflux Diet Cookbook & Cure, the answer can be found in our diet. In the 1970s, the Food and Drug Administration raised the levels of acid in prepackaged food as a way of discouraging bacterial growth and prolonging shelf life. Their motives might have been admirable, but they failed to anticipate the adverse health consequences. Today, many of the prepared foods and beverages we consume are just as acidic as stomach acid itself. Fortunately, there is a cure. With the new understanding of how diet affects reflux, Drs. Koufman and Stern enlisted French Master Chef Marc Bauer to create 75 delicious, healthful recipes using only "good for reflux" foods. The result is one of the world's healthiest and most sustainable diets, one that integrates science, medicine, and culinary art in a bold new way.

Consider this book your wake-up call. DROPPING ACID offers a groundbreaking approach to low-acid, low-fat eating. It will have you feeling better and living healthier-and it just might save your life.

I have an amazing story, plus this book
By Global Guru
It's relevant that more information is being published about this annoying problem and Dropping Acid is very helpful. The book has good info about reflux and some nice recipes (although I don't cook much).

Dr Koufman mentions early on about packaged foods generally being a problem and containing alot of acid but, I wish she would have gotten more specific about what to look for. Elsewhere I read that in the 1970's the FDA approved for preservative use in food things like: citric acid, malic acid and absorbic acid. (and who knew 35 -40 years ago that we would eventually consume SO MUCH packaged food. Almost everything in the grocery store is canned, bagged, jarred, boxed, frozen, etc.)

Once I realized this I became vigilant about looking at the ingredient contents of the food I buy. Well folks, you're going to be shocked because this is where you're getting alot of your acid intake. These preservative acids are in many canned veggies, crackers, cookies, cereals, yogurts and frozen meals....oh boy! It's crazy.

Listen, I had been taking 30mg of prescription Prevacid for almost a decade.
Here's what I did, starting Jan 2011:
1) Switched to acid-free coffee (Folgers has one called: Simply Smooth)
2) Eliminated all carbohydrated beverages (never drank much but, realized soda is poison)
3) Consume alcohol moderately. Maybe total of 3 or 4 glasses of wine per week.
4) Bought NOTHING that had any of those preservative acids in them. Clearly, this means more fresh food and only packaged w/o those acids!
5) Eat chocolate and tomato-sauced foods in small amounts (tomatoes themselves have alot of water in them so aren't a problem for me but concentrated things like pasta sauce and chili are an issue.)

After a couple of months of eating like this I had the courage to start trailing off the Prevacid. Well, I'm still surprised and thrilled to report that ** I have almost no symptoms anymore!** If I overdo it a bit (example: consume tomato sauces and wine OR chocolate and wine in the same meal) I'll feel it a bit (burping, bloating).

I now take a couple of over-the-counter Prevacid pills per week; sort of to keep things in balance. At least I'm thinking about it that way because I still can't believe that this worked. My God, all the money I would have saved on those prescriptions and the discomfort I could have avoided!

Anyhow, I hope this info is useful to others. Give it a whirl; it's worth the shot.

**UPDATE: May 2014 - Glad people are finding my review helpful. I need to add that I had not yet realized when I wrote the original review that fruit juices can be very tough on a stomach with acid sensitivity. That sounds like a no-brainer but I didn't know it and loved drinking cranberry and apple juices mostly (not citrus, I knew I couldn't tolerate that). Well, when I eliminated regular consumption of fruit juices was a BIG improvement. I take no acid reflux meds at all now. You just have to figure out what your trigger foods are and ditch them!

Dr. Koufman Saved My Husband's Life
By HRNYC
My husband has had chronic GERD for years without knowing it. He started having symptoms that didn't make sense around last January. He was short of breath, cleared his throat a lot, had nausea and an upset stomach, and finally passed out in the middle of the night. I found him unconscious on the bathroom floor. After months of tests his GI doctor diagnosed him with Barrett's syndrome, a precancerous condition of the esophagus, but he couldn't explain the respiratory involvement. Worse yet, the only solutions offered were very invasive - surgery to remove the abnormal cells or light therapy with not the best chance of success. We needed a second opinion and we found Dr. Koufman. She ran different tests that tracked his acid level during an entire day of activities, including while eating, sleeping, coughing, everything. My husband had an enormous amount of acid and was refluxing all the way up to his larynx. The standard course of treatment from the GI doctor included a one-a-day medication that did not last the full 24 hours for my husband, so since he took it in the morning, it stopped working while he was sleeping,in the worst position for reflux to again attack the esophagus that was trying to heal all day.

Within a couple of days of meeting Dr. Koufman, my husband was on the strict phase of the diet. It wasn't easy since he was previously working in the wine trade and had to completely stop drinking wine, coffee, pretty much everything except water, milk, aloe juice and camomile tea. She also changed his medications to better control the condition over 24 hours. Within about 3 weeks, he started feeling noticeably better. After a couple of months, he went back for more tests and his condition had improved dramatically. This all happened before the book was published and when it came out he was so excited by the recipes. What a difference it has made to be able to enjoy gourmet-style food after months of just obeying a list of forbidden foods. Now his condition has almost completely reversed, he has lost 35 pounds, and he is able to start adding things back in, like Gala apples.

Although a life-threatening disease is never a good thing, this experience has changed life for our entire family. Dr. Koufman's care and now her invaluable book have not only turned around my husband's condition and allowed him to take charge of his health, but the delicious recipes have allowed him to enjoy food again without feeling like he is stuck with a life-sentence of bland.

Excellent book for real results
By Ognen Duzlevski
Started with difficulty swallowing and tons of mucus in the throat. Went to see an ENT specialist, was proscribed Prilosec and told to come back in a month, diagnosis was LPR, some larynx swelling. Dropped 10 pounds in the meantime (was not overweight to begin with). Decided to forego the pills and instead bought the book. A week later no difficulty swallowing and no mucus. I am sticking to this book and diet! Yes, there are things you have to give up - I love cooking and love food, my garden is full of tomatoes and japalenos and this season they are producing! :( Oh well, what's more important? Also made the basic changes - elevated the head of the bed and stopped eating after 7 PM every day - the latter was one of my main problems - we used to eat dinner at 9 or 10 o'clock at night! While my diet was pretty decent, after eating the diet from the book, I realize how acidic my diet was! Anyways, the book is spot on.

A New York Post “Summer Must-Read” Pick

Included in Summer Book Guides from Bustle, Oprah.com, PureWow, and USA TODAY

From New York Times bestselling author of the “twisty-mystery” (Vulture) novel In a Dark, Dark Wood, comes The Woman in Cabin 10, an equally suspenseful and haunting novel from Ruth Ware—this time, set at sea.

In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…

With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10—one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned.

Review
“A classic "paranoid woman" story with a modern twist in this tense, claustrophobic mystery...The cast of characters, their conversations, and the luxurious but confining setting all echo classic Agatha Christie; in fact, the structure of the mystery itself is an old one: a woman insists murder has occurred, everyone else says she's crazy. But Lo is no wallflower; she is a strong and determined modern heroine who refuses to doubt the evidence of her own instincts.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Ware’s follow-up to her best-selling debut, In a Dark, Dark Wood, is a gripping maritime psychological thriller that will keep readers spellbound.  The intense final chapters just might induce heart palpitations.” (Library Journal, Starred Review)

"[The Woman in Cabin 10] generate[s] a dark, desperate tension that will appeal to Ware’s and Gillian Flynn’s many fans. This is the perfect summer read for those seeking a shadowy counter to the sunshine." (Booklist, Starred Review)

“A fantasy trip aboard a luxury liner turns nightmarish for a young journalist in The Woman in Cabin 10, the pulse-quickening new novel by Ruth Ware, author of In a Dark, Dark Wood.” (O Magazine)

"[A] snappy thriller set on the high seas… The first chapter will grab your attention, force it against a wall and hold it there until the end.” (Associated Press)

"Ruth Ware’s The Woman in Cabin 10 is an atmospheric thriller as twisty and tension-filled as her 2015 debut, In a Dark, Dark Wood... The novel’s tone is dark and claustrophobic as Lo continues her search for the woman even though someone is trying to stop her — maybe even kill her." (The Washington Post)

The Woman in Cabin 10

- CHAPTER 1 -

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18

The first inkling that something was wrong was waking in darkness to find the cat pawing at my face. I must have forgotten to shut the kitchen door last night. Punishment for coming home drunk.

“Go away,” I groaned. Delilah mewed and butted me with her head. I tried to bury my face in the pillow but she continued rubbing herself against my ear, and eventually I rolled over and heartlessly pushed her off the bed.

She thumped to the floor with an indignant little meep and I pulled the duvet over my head, but even through the covers I could hear her scratching at the bottom of the door, rattling it in its frame.

The door was closed.

I sat up, my heart suddenly thumping, and Delilah leaped onto my bed with a glad little chirrup, but I snatched her to my chest, stilling her movements, listening.

I might well have forgotten to shut the kitchen door, or I could even have knocked it to without closing it properly. But my bedroom door opened outward—a quirk of the weird layout of my flat. There was no way Delilah could have shut herself inside. Someone must have closed it.

I sat, frozen, holding Delilah’s warm, panting body against my chest and trying to listen.

Nothing.

And then, with a gush of relief, it occurred to me—she’d probably been hiding under my bed and I’d shut her inside with me when I came home. I didn’t remember closing my bedroom door, but I might have swung it absently shut behind me when I came in. To be honest, everything from the tube station onwards was a bit of a blur. The headache had started to set in on the journey home, and now that my panic was wearing off, I could feel it starting up again in the base of my skull. I really needed to stop drinking midweek. It had been okay in my twenties, but I just couldn’t shake off the hangovers like I used to.

Delilah began squirming uneasily in my arms, digging her claws into my forearm, and I let her go while I reached for my dressing gown and belted it around myself. Then I scooped her up, ready to sling her out into the kitchen.

But when I opened the bedroom door, there was a man standing there.

There’s no point in wondering what he looked like, because, believe me, I went over it about twenty-five times with the police. “Not even a bit of skin around his wrists?” they kept saying. No, no, and no. He had a hoodie on, and a bandanna around his nose and mouth, and everything else was in shadow. Except for his hands.

On these he was wearing latex gloves. It was that detail that scared the shit out of me. Those gloves said, “I know what I’m doing.” They said, “I’ve come prepared.” They said, “I might be after more than your money.”

We stood there for a long second, facing each other, his shining eyes locked on to mine.

About a thousand thoughts raced through my mind: Where the hell is my phone? Why did I drink so much last night? I would have heard him come in if I’d been sober. Oh Christ, I wish Judah was here.

And most of all—those gloves. Oh my God, those gloves. They were so professional. So clinical.

I didn’t speak. I didn’t move. I just stood there, my ratty dressing gown gaping, and I shook. Delilah wriggled out of my unresisting hands and shot away up the hallway to the kitchen, and I just stood there, shaking.

Please, I thought. Please don’t hurt me.

Oh God, where was my phone?

Then I saw something in the man’s hands. My handbag—my new Burberry handbag, although that detail seemed monumentally unimportant. There was only one thing that mattered about that bag. My mobile was inside.

His eyes crinkled in a way that made me think he might be smiling beneath the bandanna, and I felt the blood drain from my head and my fingers, pooling in the core of my body, ready to fight or flee, whichever it had to be.

He took a step forwards.

“No . . .” I said. I wanted it to sound like a command, but it came out like a plea—my voice small and squeaky and quavering pathetically with fear. “N—”

But I didn’t even get to finish. He slammed the bedroom door in my face, hitting my cheek.

For a long moment I stood, frozen, holding my hand to my face, speechless with the shock and pain. My fingers felt ice-cold, but there was something warm and wet on my face, and it took a moment for me to realize it was blood, that the molding on the door had cut my cheek.

I wanted to run back to bed, to shove my head under the pillows and cry and cry. But a small, ugly voice in my skull kept saying, He’s still out there. What if he comes back? What if he comes back for you?

There was a sound from out in the hall, something falling, and I felt a rush of fear that should have galvanized me but instead paralyzed me. Don’t come back. Don’t come back. I realized I was holding my breath, and I made myself exhale, long and shuddering, and then slowly, slowly, I forced my hand out towards the door.

There was another crash in the hallway outside, breaking glass, and with a rush I grabbed the knob and braced myself, my bare toes dug into the old, gappy floorboards, ready to hold the door closed as long as I could. I crouched there, against the door, hunched over with my knees to my chest, and I tried to muffle my sobs with my dressing gown while I listened to him ransacking the flat and hoped to God that Delilah had run out into the garden, out of harm’s way.

At last, after a long time, I heard the front door open and shut, and I sat there, crying into my knees and unable to believe he’d really gone. That he wasn’t coming back to hurt me. My hands felt numb and painfully stiff, but I didn’t dare let go of the handle.

I saw again those strong hands in the pale latex gloves.

I don’t know what would have happened next. Maybe I would have stayed there all night, unable to move. But then I heard Delilah outside, mewing and scratching at the other side of the door.

“Delilah,” I said hoarsely. My voice was trembling so much I hardly sounded like myself. “Oh, Delilah.”

Through the door I heard her purr, the familiar, deep, chainsaw rasp, and it was like a spell had been broken.

I let my cramped fingers loosen from the doorknob, flexing them painfully, and then stood up, trying to steady my trembling legs, and turned the door handle.

It turned. In fact it turned too easily, twisting without resistance under my hand, without moving the latch an inch. He’d removed the spindle from the other side.

Fuck.

Fuck, fuck, fuck.

I was trapped.

Imagine you have a friend...
By Basketball_Jones
Your friend-- let’s call her Debbie Downer-- is a claustrophobic, alcoholic, neurotic insomniac. She’s also a total screwup at her job, and honestly, not very bright. Her house was just broken into so you’re trying to cut her a break, but her nonstop complaining— it’s too hot, it’s too cold, the ceilings are too low, the room’s too small, my clothes smell, I’m too sleepy, I’m too hungry, I’m not hungry, I’m hungover, etc.— is getting to you. Plus there’s the counting to herself (One, Two, Three…!) and the constant, random weeping. She’s a hot mess.

Would you want to spend a lot of time hanging around her? Well, if you can stand to spend 352 pages with her, then you’ll love Lo Blacklock, the protagonist of this book.

I won’t go into a plot synopsis, others have done that already. I managed to solve the “mystery” 66% into the book (I’m on a Kindle), so kudos to the author for making the plot two-thirds difficult. As a reader it’s no fun being more clever than the protagonist. The only mystery to me was how the author was going to fill the other 33% of the book.

Some weird things in this book:

-In an early chapter, which I can only guess is used as a plot device by the author to introduce the boyfriend, Lo has a nonsensical argument with him on par with:

"You did it”
“No you did it”
“No you”
“No you”
“I love you”

and breaks up with him. I sat there thinking “What the hell did I just read?”

- At another point, during the cruise Lo locks herself in her cabin and spends a number of chapters trying to figure out how to get out. Ok, I made that up, but if it had happened, it wouldn’t have been out of place.

- Throughout, there was an absolute lack of modern communication on the luxury cruise Lo was on. No phone, no internet, like it’s a pirate ship from 1633. I’m no expert on Wifi at sea, but come on. The Bushmen in the Kalahari have iPhones at this point. It felt like a ruse to support the plot.

- And finally, the casual, illogical, loss of the evidence. It’s like Hercule Poirot saying, “Hey, I think I’ll leave the murder weapon right here, in this house full of suspects. Yeah, it’ll be here tomorrow when I come back for it. Not. worried. at. all.”

I know I’m being really hard on the author, but that’s because the critics’ reviews heightened my expectations by making the book out to be on par with The Usual Suspects, in terms of plot twists. It’s not. And that’s not the author’s fault. The book is a straight up mildly entertaining mystery, and not badly written, but there’s not a lot here to hang your hat on.

Boring, whining, drunk heroine should have been killed in the story to end the readers misery.
By George
I should have read the reviews. How did this book get on the best sellers list? Is every heroine from the UK a drunken, whining, "unreliable" witness? The author even goes so far to tell us numerous times that her heroine is a drunken unreliable witness as if we couldn't figure this out by ourselves. There are so many things wrong with this book, and yet to my own frustration it becomes a best seller. Are we as readers so numb to bad writing that we accept the rave reviews by the publisher?

The protagonist whines, drinks heavy, and mixes it with anti-depressents. She is a confused woman; one moment she is in love and the next she is breaking up. She repeats herself often, giving the reader no credit and a headache. She repeats herself...oh, I already said that. She curses for drama. The F bomb is used often as a one word sentence. She breathes and proves to us that she can count, one...two...three...breathe.

The entire first portion of the book is long and drawn out about how she really doesn't deserve being on a cruise to write a review. She's right, Lo doesn't deserve to be on this ship. She is a complete idiot. Most of her vocabulary is "Um...I...uh..." This is not the type of story that gets my heart pounding.

Once we ride over the hump of someone being murdered, the story DOES become somewhat readable. I remember thinking, here we go! But the story never produces anything more than a snore. For the remainder of the book we are led to believe that anyone on the cruise could have murdered someone that we don't even know other than the woman in cabin 10.The characters are flat. Each one of the characters kind of mesh together as the same. There is no emotional attachment to any of them. There is little show and all tell. Lo explains throughout the book who did what and why, but we as a reader are never really shown the characters because they are too busy getting a massage or taking a tour of the bridge. On a small boat, there is little to no interaction with any of the passengers. The little interaction we have is down below with the crew when Lo checks to see if she can recognize any of them as the woman in cabin 10. Of course, none of these people actually have anything to do with the murder and are a waste of time for the reader. It could have been shortened and replaced with the characters we never really know that are supposed to be so integral to the story.

Once we are told who the murderer is, the story goes as flat as the thin paper that its written on. In fact, a terrible part of the book is that we never actually have any type of dialogue or interaction with the murderer. NONE!

***SPOILER ALERT***

The opening of the book starts with a break-in to the apartment of Lo. She is a clumsy person and the attacker slams the door into her face: another example of why I ask if every protagonist from the UK has to be a drunken idiot. She walks around for the remainder of the book with a bruise on her face reminding us as readers that we are fools for giving a book like this anything above 2 stars. This part of the book did intrigue me however and I could see why people picked up the book with interest wondering who and why the attacker broke into Lo's apartment. But that part never materializes. The break-in to Lo's apartment has absolutely nothing to do with the book, other than giving her the anxiety that we have beaten into our heads of being attacked.

The other issue is that we never have any real interaction with the murderer, Richard. It could have been a much better book if we actually had a thriller with Richard chasing Lo maybe with a knife and beating the hell out of her. Wouldn't that be exciting? Instead we are told how she feels bad for the woman in cabin 10 who locked her up in a cell for countless boring chapters of all the same. We never have any, and I repeat, any real interaction with Richard other than the hot tub and a brief encounter while Lo is drunk. There I go again. Lo was drunk. The only information we are told about Richard is that he is like Richard Branson; funny how the author didn't even change the first name obviously referencing the famous billionaire in real life. We are later told how dangerous he is, though we never see any of that. It could have been more interesting if Richard had planned the break-in to Lo's apartment in the beginning. That was my guess. It would have been more sinister. Richard the conniving bastard had the entire murder planned and broke into Lo's apartment to set her up as the murderer. But alas, the break-in meant absolutely nothing and we never really meet Richard other than a couple of brief encounters because he is too busy running his large corporate world.

I have always felt the opening line of a book should give us a hint to what a story is about.

"The first inking that something was wrong was waking in the darkness to find the cat pawing at my face. I must have forgotten to shut the kitchen door last night. Punishment for coming home drunk."

This has to be one of the least driving opening statements in a book, but it is telling. She tells us she is drunk. She uses the word was twice in the opening sentence.

I give her one star for being published. Hey, she made it as a published author and a best seller. Thats better than I can say, but I'm still giving it a bad review because she put me through the torture of forcing myself to read such a boring book. Will someone please tell me there are agents and publishers out there who really enjoy a good book and not the same old crap they keep publishing about a drunken unreliable witness? I'm tired of it and you as a reader should be too.

Weak weak weak
By Lisa
Great premise but I could see the cracks early with the main character. She was weak, insecure, angry and not able to even stay awake most of the time during her ordeal that followed (seriously, do not take a shot every time the word sleep shows up in this novel - you will die of alcohol poisoning). I get so let down when authors want you to believe in characters like this. It's like those old movies where you scream: "Don't look in the basement!" She was unbelievably naive in every situation so the thriller effect was totally lost on me. I'd like my money back ;)

Witty and information-packed
By Rory Coker
You've borrowed Mr. Peabody's time machine and come to London in circa 1600 to attend a play at the Globe. The riffraff, who paid a penny to get in, are standing around the stage for the full 3-hour performance... apprentices, sailors, rivermen, prostitutes, a cross-section of working London. But if you raise your eyes to the three tiers of boxes, what kinds of Londoners do you see? This is the question that Gurr investigates, in a way appreciative of the inherent great amusement to be found in the sources, in this extremely interesting book. And he also investigates how the audiences who attended plays at the bottom of the "social register" of playhouses, the Red Bull, differed from those who attended the other houses, up to and including the top of the mark, Blackfriars, where the King's Men played in Winter.

There is surprisingly little existing documentation that can be used to investigate, much less answer, these questions and Gurr supplies an analysis of the documentation, and then in two appendices, the documentation itself... a list of those who are known to have attended plays, and a list of quotations from sources of the time that bear on the composition and tastes of the audience. The book is scholarly, but Gurr's witty style makes it a pleasure to read as well. I particularly liked the vain playwright who could convince himself that that hissing noise was not the audience expressing disapproval of the stage business, but rather a large number of people simultaneously opening their beer bottles. [Were they drinking "Red Bull"?!?]

Detailed but interesting reading
By A Customer
I never knew until I read this book, how little is really known about playgoing in Shakespeare's time. Much has to be deduced from adding a letter here, to a playbill there, to an essay from somewhere else. Gurr is an excellent writer and does a great job in this book of making such a collection of details interesting reading. He also does an absolutely outstanding job of drawing conclusions based on evidence and not filling in the blanks with guesswork. He discusses the theaters, the actors, the audiences, dress, classes, and touches on dozens of contemporary topics including the plague, pickpockets and cutpurses, the weather, and prices. There are a couple of appendices with interesting lists of surviving documentary evidence regarding playgoing.

Accurate and meticulous description of Shakespeare's Theatre
By A Customer
An excellent book complete with little-known details about the state of the theatre in England during Shakespeare's time. A great source for those researching theatre and theatre history as well as reading up on Shakespeare himself. Highly recommended.
