Looking at the cover image I first thought that this book would be for advanced carvers only but as I looked through the different projects, with the in-depth directions and step-by-step photos I changed my mind. Although the projects are from simple to complex, even the complex ones are doable by beginners, just by carefully following each step and perhaps, if necessary, simplifying some of the details. Project include traditional characters, humorous designs, craft ideas, and more. How proud I would be to have any of these projects adorning my house for the holidays.

The Handcarved Christmas book (ISBN 978-1-56523-605-9; Fox Chapel Publishing) contains projects and patterns for ornaments, gifts, earrings, several Santas and more. There are also instructions for how to carve intaglio style, adding texture with a woodburner, making an adjustable carving, how to weight a carving and using mass production techniques.

Nice projects for various levels of experience

I am new to carving and I like all the patterns in this book. I am disappointed that they were not more step by step illustrations for more of the items. It will be a while before I can tackle some of these projects as they are quite involved. I like the variety of projects shown but many of them are for a more experienced carver. I hope to get to the point where they will be easier for me to handle.

BESt Christmas Carving book I have ever seen. I had taken this book out from my local library. Renewed it 4 times!! when I couldn't renew it the 5th time knew I just had to buy it. Its the best if you love christmas and carving this is a must have. Oh yes Santa Galore which for me was a huge plus

Must have whittling book for Christmas

Amazon does a good job showing you what is in the book. The book has simple patterns for beginners, and complicated patterns for advanced whittlers. There are detailed instructions on how to carve each figure. Great looking Christmas themed figures.

K-Gr 2—A cuddly, white cub lives with a little boy in a home in which retro furniture and telephones with cords suggest the mid-20th-century. When the animal's size quickly outpaces the boy's (and the scale of the house), the child sets out to find a new habitat for his friend. The titular question becomes the narrative engine for a series of spreads taking the duo to places ranging from a toy store and zoo to the circus and jungle. Nothing suits the bear, until they arrive at the Arctic. The controlled palette for each spare composition relates to the changing colors of the (mostly solid) backgrounds. The boy's navy shorts and blue-and-white striped shirt are constants as are the white curves of the animal. Their friendship survives the distance, and the bear proposes a new trip together, setting up the boy to ask the question one last time. This pleasant but not distinguished foray into picture books by a British art director is strong on design but a bit short on sustaining narrative interest. With the exception of the circus scene, the bear is a static figure—either sitting or standing—in each new situation. The narrative wears a little thin, with no dramatic tension, action, or climactic rise in the plot or visuals to enliven the repetitive text.—Wendy Lukehart, District of Columbia Public Library

About the Author
Sophy Henn (www.sophyhenn.com) lives and works in Sussex, England. She studied Fashion at Central Saint Martins, accidentally had a London based career as an Art Director in advertising, then completed an MA at University of Brighton in Illustration. Now she writes and illustrates children's books in her studio, with a large cup of tea by her side, and can't quite believe her luck. WHERE BEAR? is her first book. Follow @sophyhenn.

the best book ever this week

And the final book, the best book ever this week, is called Where Bear? And it's by Sophy Henn. And this just might be a perfect picture book. Where Bear? stars of boy and his bear, and the boy just continues to ask that reprised, "Where bear?" Where should you go? Where do you want to go as you're growing and growing larger? Where should your home be? And the boy searches all over to find "Is it a zoo? How about if we bring you to a toy shop? What about the jungle?" And no place is right. And so the boy keeps asking, "Well then where, bear?" And finally we find the just right place. But the other thing that works so well is not just the terse language in this book, but also the way that each background in this book is just a solid pastel color, a pastel and gray color. And we just see that boy and the bear, who are basically gray and white, black and white, right up front and right up close. They are the star of our book, and that's where our eyes will go for the entire book. It's a marvel to read. I think you're going to read and just sigh and be thankful that such wonderful books exist in this world. And that's why I'm calling Where Bear? by Sophy Henn the best book ever this week. Way to go!

What do you do with a bear you have outgrown?

What do you do with a bear when he’s too big for your house? You find him a new house……..but where? In the forest? In the circus? In a toy shop? Or in the zoo? These are questions a boy is pondering as he realizes that his little bear has grown up just like him and he feels that the bear needs room to be “bearish and big.” The duo sets off to find the perfect spot but bear is not satisfied with where the boy takes him. The boy finally comes up with an idea and it works. I think children will enjoy the book as it was a sweet relationship and the illustrations were simple.

This book has quickly become my 3 year old son's favorite. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is adorable. We like to come up with reasons why we think Bear doesn't want to live in certain places. I love books that allow children to come up with a little story of their own. He always wants to read this book at least three times in a row. Beautiful work :)

A map with major highways not animals!

This is exactly what I was looking for to show to my preschooler where we are going. All the other maps out there cover the states with landmarks and animals so my daughter thinks we're going to see buffalo or such. Thank you Rand McNally!

The most "user friendly" homeopathic guide available!

Dr. Hershoff writes a homeopathic reference masterpiece in his latetest homeopathic guidebook. Homeopathic Remedies is easy to use and covers a huge spectrum of ailments. Even a novice will be able to prescribe homeopathy after reading it! Along with information on how to prescribe homeopathic remedies and dosages, Dr. Hershoff gives a brief but yet very throrough history of homeopathy. This book is so complete, that it is the only guide you need to begin your own gentle art of healing using homeopathy.

Excellent Reference

This book is an exceptional introduction to the world of homeopathy.
It begins with a detailed explanation of the concepts behind this form of medicine, including the systems of the body, definitions of disease and injury, types of pain and much more. It also include basic information that correlates to all homeopathic remedies, including dosing information and contraindications. The system of dosing homeopathics can be a little confusing at first, as it comes across as a bit "backwards" (a lower number being a more concentrated tincture), and this book does an excellent job of explaining this system in a reader-friendly way.

After the numerous introductory articles, this book contains an "A-Z Prescriber" that is indispensable as a household reference. It covers mental, emotional and physical diseases, from stress to bleeding to infections and SO much more. Under each disease section, it covers a list of all the different potential remedies, with detailed explanations of the variations in symptoms that indicate one may work better than another- there are no "one size fits all" diagnoses or remedies in homeopathy.

As a parent, I can sleep better knowing I have this book on hand. I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where these substances are relatively easy to come by, so I have the peace of mind knowing that if my daughter has a problem, I can quickly identify the best way to help her. There is a whole section on children's diseases, from colic to chickenpox, ear infections and more.

My experiences thusfar with homeopathy have been incredible. In one instance, I slammed my finger in a sliding door so hard that it started bleeding underneath my nail, and there was a clear dark line across the entire nail. I was almost certain I was going to lose the nail, and my finger swelled up a good 5x its normal size. Enter Arnica... I applied Arnica gel to my entire finger twice that day. The swelling was completely eliminated in less than an hour, and the trapped blood began to shift and partially clear within a day. Within 2 days, the dark line has disappeared and there was just one small pocket of blood, which grew out with my nail and left no trace of the injury. I was quite impressed.

My second confirmation of homeopathy's authenticity came in the form of teething medicine. My daughter was cutting 5 teeth at the same time, and, understandably, quite miserable. I purchased a homeopathic teething gel from my local Whole Foods, which contained a combination of pain relieving and calming plant extracts. I happened to be cutting a wisdom tooth myself, so I tried it out on my tooth to see if it was any good. I was amazed that it offered faster and better relief than Orajel or similar allopathic products. It didn't completely numb my gums, just took the pain away, completely! So of course I offered it to the baby, who was instantly soothed and slept, well, like a baby :)

And my third testament to homeopathy is my experience with baby's first ear infection. I'm rather wary of antibiotics, as I have done a vast amount of research on antibiotic resistance and childhood ear infections, and recognize that 1. antibiotics increase the reccurance of ear infections because they suppress the immune system; 2. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 80% of ear infections will clear up with no treatment; and 3. in studies, antibiotics only shortened the length of the infection by one day.
So I purchased a bottle of Dr. Sears recommended homeopathic ear drops, and I was blown away by the results. She had been completely inconsolable, screaming, kicking, running away and pulling on her ears. Within a minute of putting the drops in her ears, she stopped crying, smiled and gave me a big hug! We used the drops every 8 hours for 2 days- and that quick, the infection was gone. I remember taking a 2 week course of amoxycillin for an ear infection at the age of 11, and that didn't even work. 2 days instead of 2 weeks? No side effects? Yes please.

All of the above remedies are congruent with the prescriber in this book.
I will also add that this book covers some topics you might not expect- vaccine detoxification (helping eliminate the mercury and formaldehyde used as preservatives in vaccines from your body), reproductive issues like ovarian cysts, uterine hemorrhage... a lot of things you wouldn't expect.

This book is excellent, the only thing it lacks is detailed explanations of what each remedy is, where it comes from and how it works. I understand this book is about the ailment of your body, not the herbs itself, and would be 3x the size and 3x the price if it also included detailed information on the substances themselves. I'm currently looking for the perfect "counterpart" to this book, a book about the tinctures themselves. In the meantime, the internet does suffice :) I will update my review with a product link when I find the right one.

Best homeopathic books for the beginner

I've been studying and using homeopathy for me and my family for about ten years now and I've tried lots of books, but this book is by far my favorite. The prescribing guidelines are some of the most accurate and precise as compared to other self-help homeopathy book. He also lists a wider range of treatable conditions with homeopathy than other homeopathy books. I wrote this book using the notes that I scribbled down while studying for the neurosurgery oral board examination. This book is not intended to serve as a replacement for the classic neurosurgical texts, but as a supplement to the knowledge gained during the long years of residency and in the early stages of practice. I tried to focus on the major aspects of diseases that a neurosurgeon may encounter, both in clinical practice and on the examination. For a more thorough helping of knowledge, consider thumbing through the texts in the reference list. My favorite is Comprehensive Neurosurgical Board Review, but I may be a little biased. That book was geared for the written boards, but the anatomy, pathology/radiology, neurology, and neurosurgery sections provide useful information that is not covered in this text. I must admit that I was a tad intimidated by the oral examination before I lived through it. I expected hear "So Dr. Citow can you please show me the incision for the hypoglossal-pundendal nerve anastomsas used for people who constantly speak out of their asses…" But it really was a fair test and a surprisingly pleasant experience. I truly got the sense that the examiners are out to reinforce their preconceived notion that the examinee (you) is indeed competent (not the other way around) and makes reasonable decisions. They are not out to trick you with obscure details. Stay relaxed and suggest exactly what you would do in everyday practice (not at the Mayo Clinic) and all will be fine. The only disheartening aspect of the test is that none of the examiners smile (but this may be their baseline state) or acknowledge that you are correct, but neither do your patients in the hospital, unless they have been on the Internet. . . . An outstanding work

I finally found myself in that book. I thought I was lost going through big texts of neurosurgery and I could not grasp all the information needed to pass my exam. Now that this amazing book is available I'm sure I will pass the exam . It provides a good frame for studying and contains all one needs to prepare for the neurosurgery exam. It saves time and a lot of effort . I envy younger neurosurgeons because this work is now available at their hands.. study will be much easier.

Description: This is a valuable and helpful resource that contains most of the fundamental information that a neurosurgery resident needs to know in order to pass the written boards. The book is written by specialists in a variety of disciplines, mainly neurosurgery, neurology, and pathology from the University of Chicago Medical Center.

Purpose: The book is targeted to junior and senior neurosurgery residents, who typically have little time available to absorb the massive amount of literature pertaining to the neurosurgical science. The purpose is primarily to provide a comprehensive board review for neurosurgery residents. This is a worthy and important objective and the book largely meets it. The material can also be very helpful to academic neurosurgeons engaged in teaching activities, physicians from variable specialties, medical students, and other health care professionals attentive to the field of Neurosurgery.

Audience: "Young Neurosurgeons preparing for the hurdles for professional examinations will find this to be a most valuable aid". The authors are credible authorities and have an exact understanding of what their audience wants and needs from this comprehensive review.

Features: A wide variety of topics are concisely reviewed with a special focus to deliver take home messages. The sequence of chapters is defined in the preface and the book is divided into six chapters: Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Radiology, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Critical Care. The index is very helpful and the book is supplemented by a considerable number of fine quality illustrations.

Assessment: This is a valuable neurosurgery review book for the written boards. It has a dense amount of high yield information and represents an excellent resource for neurosurgery residents. "It is remarkable that the chief editor had the ability to write this book while still in residency", which makes it very useful to its intended audience. Readers are encouraged to supplement their readings with other in depth detailed sources.

Neurosurgery review books at their best.

This is a perfect example of works that matured over the years into a kind of a legend. It's an excellent review source for board exams and the FRCS(SN). Personally, I think it's a must have for neurosurgical residents and registrars. Having said that, I must say, this book is NOT "neurosurgery for dummies". It is only a review book designed to draw your attention to important points and emphasize its significance. It's not designed to cover all and everything you need to know!.

PROS:
1) It is much more refined than the previous edition.
2) It is much more organised
3) Appears to Include Citow's other books under one cover. I don't recommend buying them if you buy this one.
i.e. a) "Neuoradiology and neuropathology :a review" --> LINK : Neuropathology and Neuroradiology: A Review
b) "Neuroanatomy and neuropysiology :A review" --> LINK :Neuroanatomy and Neurophysiology: A Review

CONS:
1) All in American units ... Any edition for the European market?
2) Errors in the book i.e some "RIGHT side" miraculously became "LEFT side" in the book.

About the Author

Dr Raj Kumar Bansal is presently Principal of Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology, Rajpura, Punjab. He received his Ph. D. from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur and his teaching and research experience spans more than threeand-a-half decades. His research interests include power systems, control systems, optimization techniques, and fuzzy logic systems.
Dr Ashok Kumar Goel is presently working as Principal, Indo Global College of Engineering, Abhipur. He holds a Ph. D. from Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala. He has more than two decades of teaching and research experience. His research interests include neural networks, fuzzy logic systems, genetic algorithms, and particle swarm optimization.
Manoj Kumar Sharma is presently working as Lecturer at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. He holds an M. Tech. from Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana. He has almost a decade of teaching and research experience. His research interests include artificial neural networks, control systems, and energy management.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student’s perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her publications are known.


Dr. Marieb has partnered with Benjamin Cummings for over 30 years. Her first work was Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory Manual (Cat Version), which came out in 1981. In the years since, several other lab manual versions and study guides, as well as the softcover Essentials of Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, have hit the campus bookstores. This textbook, now in its Ninth edition, made its appearance in 1989 and is the latest expression of her commitment to the needs of students studying human anatomy and physiology.


Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by funding a staffed drop-in center and by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women who are returning to college after a hiatus or attending college for the first time and who would be unable to continue their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and has underwritten renovation and updating of one of the biology labs in Clapp Laboratory at that college. Dr. Marieb also contributes to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she generously provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory. Recognizing the severe national shortage of nursing faculty, she underwrites the Nursing Scholars of the Future Grant Program at the university.


In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

In January 2012, Florida Gulf Coast University named a new health professions facility “Dr. Elaine Nicpon Marieb Hall.” With the help of Dr. Marieb’s generous donation, this facility contains laboratories in the School of Nursing that simulate an operating room, intensive-care unit, a labor and delivery room, and general medical surgical suites. She has also established a scholarship endowment for non-traditional students in the health professions, and an endowment to enhance the activities of faculty, students, and staff within health professions to support education, research, and community outreach.


Dr. Marieb is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology ® CD-ROM series.


When not involved in academic pursuits, Dr. Marieb is a world traveler and has vowed to visit every country on this planet. Shorter term, she serves on the scholarship committee of the Women’s Resources Center and on the board of directors of several charitable institutions in Sarasota County. She is an enthusiastic supporter of the local arts and enjoys a competitive match of doubles tennis.

 

Susan J. Mitchell earned her Ph.D. in physiology from the University of Michigan. She studied the cellular basis of behavior before joining the faculty at Onondaga Community College where she is currently a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Her research in neurophysiology and training in physiology positioned her to write the original Nervous, Endocrine, and Digestive System modules in the Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite tutorial program. She has been honored with a NISOD Excellence Award for teaching, and been awarded several grants to develop technological resources for biology at OCC. Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Physiological Society, National Association of Biology Teachers, National Science Teachers Association, and the Human Anatomy and Physiological Society (HAPS), where she is currently active on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee.

 

Lori A. Smith received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California at Davis. Before discovering her passion for teaching, she worked as a research scientist and project leader in the medical diagnostics industry. In 1999, she joined the faculty at American River College in the Biology Department.  Currently she teaches anatomy and physiology and microbiology to pre-nursing and mortuary science students at American River College. Starting in 2005, she began co-authoring Pearson’s PhysioEx: Laboratory Simulations in Physiology and has continued to co-author several versions of the software and lab manual. Dr. Smith has been awarded “Instructor of the Year” by the American River College Associated Students for her commitment to serving students, and she is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT).

This book matches the paper book pages exactly. It is easy to navigate through the manual.

It is nice not to have to carry around the cumbersome lab manual, but the Ebook is not interactive. I have to write all of my homework on a separate sheet of paper and cannot label the photos unless I draw them.

I bought the kindle version because it was a lot cheaper, but I definitely regret it because it has caused me so much more work and stress for class.

I would not recommend the kindle version of this book to someone who needs to write on the lab manual pages.

SELLER IS A LIFE SAVER!

I am a student and needed this book for school, so I purchased it through this seller. I later received an email saying I did not need the book so the seller allowed me to return the book with FREE SHIPPING! Then, when I had my first class my professor had changed and he wanted us to have the book for lab, so I ended up needing it, when i contacted the seller, he sent it back to me when he received it with NO CHARGE. Book was also in awesome condition, no marks and still in plastic wrapping!

great lab manual

I got this e-book and put it on my iPad and I love it. Nobody in my class will bring the lab book to class, but I always bring it on my tablet - since it weights almost nothing. The manual is huge (~1,000 pages) but so far I am pleased with the content.
