A very nice version of a classic story

Having bought other stories in the same series, I got the Three little Pigs in the Keepsake Classic series as well and I am not disappointed. I like the illustrations alot and the fact that the wolf is kinda drawn in a goofy, non-scary way. I think it is a really good version.....the only thing I found odd were the first 2 pages where the 3 pigs go out on their own...there is no explanation exactly what they mean but there is a picture of what looks like their parents saying good bye and waving a hankie ..I am sure this is to explain why exactly these 3 pigs even NEED to make a house each.... but it doesn't really cut it.....My 3 year old asked me WHY they had to go away and leave their Mommy and I said " Cuz they are all grown up"....I don't know - I guess what I am trying to say is that maybe the story line could have explained this alittle better to go with the illustration...saying something about 3 little pigs who grew up to be big and strong and one day decided to make houses all their very own...I know its a kids book but still I found the first 2 pages kinda lame...a couple more sentences would have sufficed to exaplin exactly why all of asudden these three pigs were walking away joyfully from their parents who seem sad and are waving hankies...KWIM?
Other then that, I thought it was very nicely done.....

This is a good book if you want the traditional story of the "The Three Little Pigs". Pictures are clear and story has the traditional wording. So, if you want the traditional story, this is the book to purchase.

Nice-not so scary for younger children

This is a nice rendition of a favorite story.
The pictures of the wolf are not so scary.
The pigs are also cute. Our two year old
would be scared if the characters looked
mean or threatening. The wolf even jumps
out of the boiling pot and runs away in the
end. Very nice.

This wonderful new translation by eminent translator Burton Raffel brings the epic poem to life in English for the first time, rendering it in verse that does full justice to the original High Middle German. His translation underscores the formal aspects of the poem and preserves its haunting beauty. Often called the German lliad, Das Nibelungenlied is a heroic epic both national in character and sweeping in scope. The poem moves inexorably from romance through tragedy to holocaust. It portrays the existential struggles and downfall of an entire people, the Burgundians, in a military conflict with the Huns and their king. In his foreword to the book, Michael Dirda observes that the story “could be easily updated to describe the downfall of a Mafia crime family, something like The Godfather, with swords.” The tremendous appeal of Das Nibelungenlied throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is reflected in such works as Richard Wagner’s opera tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen, Fritz Lang’s two-part film Die Nibelungen, and, more recently, J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Exceptional translation of a classic

Burton Raffel's new translation of Das Nibelungenlied, the foremost epic of German literature, stands head and shoulders above every other translation available today. Fast-paced and clear, this English Nibelungenlied gives new life to the old Siegfried legend. One thing that immediately sets Raffel's translation apart from others is that he has chosen to translate the epic into poetry. As a result, his translation perfectly captures the flavor of the original.

Das Nibelungenlied is one of the underappreciated classics of western literature. An inspiration and source for everything from Wagner to Tolkien, the epic was first written in the 12th century, copied extensively throughout the High Middle Ages, and then virtually disappeared until the 1700s. Its popularity bloomed again during the romantic era, when poets keen on the medieval romance and scholars seeking a Germanic national literature found a common inspiration in the rediscovered epic.

None of this, of course, is apparent while reading the poem. But a foreword, introduction, and translator's notes--all wonderfully concise--give the reader all the information necessary to appreciating the poem's history with none of the pain found in dry, scholarly studies. Far from boring, the introduction and notes actually enhance the reader's enjoyment of the poem.

Raffel's translation is a thing of beauty. Comparison with the original Middle High German shows that he took great pains to balance a literal, accurate translation with poetic English verse. Raffel's endnotes to the translation give the reader some sense of his goals in translating the book--not only to match the simple, unadorned wording of the original, but also to render its quick-moving poetic style in English. His hard work paid off.

Whatever your interest in Das Nibelungenlied and whether or not you read the scholarly extras found in this book, Raffel's translation is exciting, brisk, and a joy to read.

What a fabulous (and modern) translation!

I had to buy this book for a class I took last year and had no idea of what to expect...I started reading this, and could not put it down! Frankly, I don't think that's something to scoff at, considering it is a 300 page 13th century poem! Usually, when reading something that old, one finds that the translator has insisted on maintaining the rhyme or form of the original, which is honestly quite exasperating for the modern reader. This one, while mainting the visual appearance of the poem with the mid-line and end-line breaks, reads exactly as prose and is so much more comfortable to work with!

I ended up reading through three books of translation theory written by Burton Raffel in an effort to analze and critique this book for a second class I was taking (one on translation), and really wish I could type up some of the points I came across in my research. Suffice it to say, I truly believe this is one of the best English translations of the Nibelungenlied there is (and I have read through a fair number of them), particularly when considering the modern reader.

There may be complaints by those who feel that the poem should be maintained with its "original" rhyme and form, and if that's truly what you are looking for, there are plenty of other translations out there that deliver this. Raffel's deviates only in that aspect, and is otherwise quite perfect at retaining the mood and content of the original written poem, and does so in a way that the modern reader can appreciate and comprehend.

This is a piece of literature taken from an era of history that we can never really grasp, since it is so different from ours, and yet I think the heart of the story remains extraordinarily clear and accessible for anyone today. I really cannot recommend this book enough.

Two well-crafted, self-destructive and not terribly likeable characters watch their lives spiral downwards in Halle Butler's debut novel Jillian. Megan is a recent college graduate stuck in a dead-end job as a receptionist in a doctor's office, bitter about her peers' passions and successes in their own careers and disgusted by the cheery, optimistic façade of her co-worker Jillian, a mid-thirties single mom who hasn't quite figured out how to be a grown-up. If you're one of those people who enjoy slow-motion-car-wreck stories, this book is for you. If you're not, you'll still appreciate Butler's surprising and outlandish wit that had me laughing out loud on more than one occasion. The novel feels immersed in that gray area between writing what you know and not writing a semi-biographical coming-of-age book the moment you step from college to the real world. Butler writes with the carefully selected details of someone who has experienced some of this story, from a menial job to awkward party chitchat. Yet at the same time, with two unappealing characters and a plot that follows an unwavering path of first world problems, the story would fail (and probably has failed) in the hands of many writers. These difficulties allow Butler's skill to shine through all the more. Jillian is compulsively readable, thanks to its short, impactful scenes, utter honesty, and frequent flashes of hilarity. For example, when Jillian tells a reluctant Megan she would make a great mom, Butler unleashes, "Megan wanted to stand up and hysterectomize herself with the letter opener while screaming and then throw her uterus at the wall above Jillian's desk just to show Jillian how wrong she was about that." By themselves, passages like these make Jillian a thoroughly enjoyable read, but they also suggest the great potential for Butler's next novel.

Raw, Cutting, Primeval and Engaging

In her debut novel, Jillian, author Halle Butler charges into the territory of the perverse, the grotesque, and the downright ugly side of human nature that Henderson claims is essential to the verve and passion of great literary artworks. Butler’s characters are awful, hate-able, and sometimes sickeningly relatable, and this relatability is the true mark of intrigue for the novel.

Jillian is told from the perspectives of Megan, Jillian, and once and while an oddball character like Crispy the dog. Megan and Jillian work together in a colonoscopy office – which is about the only thing they think they have in common. Megan is a 24-year-old sulking, borderline alcoholic who finds – not joy, but perhaps meaning (?), fulfillment, (?) necessity (?) in criticizing and belittling others in her own mind. Jillian is her arch nemesis for no other reason than Jillian’s ignorance, annoyance to Megan, and her vastly different worldview. Jillian is a 35-year-old single mother who is the poster woman for self-help, mantra repeating, positivity in the most obnoxious way imaginable.

As we engage with these two women, we begin to see the similarities among their apparently vast differences. We see the common elements of human struggle, of human selfishness, of removal from and lack of acceptance of reality, of complacency and the different methods of dealing with the sometimes static condition of life.

Raw, cutting, primeval and engaging in a terrifying way, Butler’s BLANK PAGE book will take you a few flicks of your wrist to get through. For however powerful it is though, thank god it’s so short, because it makes you feel like you’re locked in a damp cage, naked and caked with dirt, while everyone is looking at you as you struggle to breathe.

Yes, exactly like that: a little bit the way life feels sometimes.

This is some potent writing.

This is some potent writing. I got into the skewed twinning between the focuses on Jillian and Megan, but I think the real skill here is how Bulter keeps you alternating between rooting for and not liking either of these characters. It's masterfully done and very moving, even in a normal daily life kind of scenario. It definitely beats you around a bit too if for no other reason for what and how much it gets under your skin, but you don't want to stop reading. It's stressful, but very good. I'm impressed.
