That pretty much sums up my attitude towards the book. I would give a whole hearted recommendation to reading "Does Christianity squash women" by Rebecca Jones instead.

If you're an out and out feminist who loves "Womyn's Studies" and thinks that its ok to refer to God as a chick, then you'll like this book. But if you believe that God made clear gender differences in creation, you won't.

And like I said, the writting style isn't very engaging.

Really good book for a beginning your search on how to run a bakery business. One thing it doesn't address though is how to run a SMALL bakery. This is for people who want to run a huge shop with a dozen or more employees. What if it's just you and a friend working out of a shed in the back yard? I would personally like to know a little more about that. But for a start, it's good at helping you learn where to order supplies, how to order, how to price your product, what the minimum tools are for the trade, and a few specialty tools that will make life easier.

Not the same as the library's edition

My daughters and I love this book, but I subtracted a star because it is not quite the same story I expected. We checked it out of the library a couple times, then had to have our own edition. The story and illustrations are slightly changed. My daughters, ages 2 and 4, noticed the changes, and I think the story misses out a little.
For example, the library book starts with a bit booming sound in the jungle and all the animals are startled, but then we find out it's just the herd of the happy elephants who are laughing. The book I just bought begins saying "There was once a herd of elephants," but then it goes on to say that they were happy. Also, this edition does not have the bird who helps Elmer in covering himself with elephant-colored berries. Same story, but some very sweet details are missing.
I don't know why they've shortened the story; maybe they think children cannot stay focused for the longer version. In any case, I will be looking for an older edition, or maybe there's a current book with the same story.
Overall great book, but it has been better.

Decent overview, would like to see more

This booklet is short and to the point. I would pay more to see more details - for instance, a more practical example of I2C hardware.
Also, this book needs a bit of editing by a native English speaking person. Given that it's currently the only book dedicated to Digispark hardware, not too bad. Perhaps the manufacturer can add their contribution?

OK but a few linguistic problems

This is one of the only if not THE only book for the digispark range of boards.
Unlike the Arduino series which use the Atmel Atmega328 the Digispark uses the ATtiny 85 an a compressed version of the Arduino code allowing it to be programmed by a suitably modified Arduino IDE. It does however have a far smaller amount of useable memory after the bootloader has been installed so don't think you can simply port your Arduino UNO code across to the Digispark because you can't
This book is a definitely "to have" if you're playing with the Digispark but you need to be aware that this has been written by someone whose first language appears to have not been english.
Consequently some of the book takes some rereading and considerable decoding before you can make sense of it.
All said and done though this is a worthwhile addition I just can't make it more than "it's ok" as a review as it should have had a deeper proof read by someone who could rephrase sentences correctly.

Breathtakingly beautiful, moving, and poetic...

Let's talk about how tremendously much I loved this book.

Aristotle ("Ari") is a sensitive yet somewhat angry 15-year-old growing up in Texas in the 1980s. The baby of the family, he feels disconnected from his older sisters, and his older brother went to prison when Ari was very young, and his family never speaks of him. He also feels as if his father, a Vietnam vet suffering from PTSD, is a mystery to him, and he wishes that weren't the case. He spends most of his days alone, distant from others.

"In order to be wildly popular you had to make people believe that you were fun and interesting. I just wasn't that much of a con artist."

One day at the local swimming pool, Ari meets Dante, a boy his age from another high school. Dante offers to teach Ari how to swim, and the two begin an intense friendship. Their conversations touch on poetry, art, their shared Mexican-American heritage (of which Dante is less enamored), and the way they don't quite "get" their parents, although Dante's relationship with his parents is much more open and emotionally honest. which Ari envies.

"I was mostly invisible. I think I liked it that way. And then Dante came along."

As their relationship intensifies, Ari finds himself simultaneously needing Dante's friendship and being scared by that need. He's still not willing to confront his parents with the questions he has about his father and his brother, which makes him angrier and sadder. And when a split-second decision leaves their friendship on unequal footing, Dante reveals that his feelings for Ari are stronger than friendship. Ari doesn't want to lose Dante's friendship but he's not willing to deal with Dante's feelings.

What will it take for us to lay down the armor we have around our hearts, to put aside our anger and sadness and realize that we are worthy of love and being loved? How can a person determined never to need anyone let themselves actually need someone? How can you tell the difference between friendship and love? Benjamin Alire Saenz's novel is so beautifully poetic, so emotional--it's funny, heartbreaking, frustrating, and rewarding. Just like life is.

I thought the characters in this book were so beautifully drawn. While at times Ari's anger, depression, and withdrawal was a little frustrating, watching his character transition in a realistic way was worth it. I found myself re-reading paragraphs that I marveled at, both because of Saenz's use of language and because I was so moved.

Some have expressed frustration that the resolution of the book felt incomplete. While I might agree, it didn't take away from my enjoyment of this book at all. I do hope, however, given the response to this book, that Saenz might consider writing a follow-up, because I'd love to know what happens next.

I read a lot, and this year alone, have read some phenomenal books. Without a doubt, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is one of those.

I liked this a lot, but... it comes with a surprising but.

I read this for the #ReadProud challenge, Week 3.

This was a contemporary gay YA novel featuring Mexican-American teenage boys. It was a very fast read, with many many very short chapters - I have a weakness for short chapters, so I liked this a lot.

It had wonderful characterization, and angsty teens who came across as actual angsty teens and not some sort of novelistic cliché. I especially loved that (minor spoiler at the end*) - I had that experience (with being trans) where other people knew before I did, and it is not something I see in fiction a lot. I also liked that the parents were well-rounded people and characters in their own right.

I also really liked the cover and the fact that 1. there was calligraphy on the cover 2. the calligrapher was credited (Sarah Jane Coleman).

But there was one part where I did feel that the book kicked me in the jaw, and not in a good sense. This is a major spoiler, and it is about anti-trans hate crimes:

(spoilers from here onward)

The crime that the protagonist's older brother is jailed for is revealed toward the end as.... he killed a trans woman ("transvestite" - sic) sex worker in what seemed to have been a "trans panic" episode. Now. It is made amply clear throughout the book that the brother committed a real crime, so I was glad that it was revealed to be a real crime and he wasn't innocent. BUT. The fact that a lot of the plot involves the family coming to terms with his being in prison, AND the fact that out of ALL possible crimes, the author had to choose this one, really made me feel uncomfortable. I will also probably not pick up the upcoming sequel, because I really don't want to see more 'coming to terms with' with that. This was just one paragraph in the book, but it really soured me on it. Without this paragraph, it would have been an easy five stars... but this changed the interpretation of an entire plotline, and in a way that felt gratuitious to me, especially seeing as this was the only time trans people appeared in the novel.

* - one of the characters had to be cluebatted about being gay

Don't Miss It!

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I had read the reviews and saw that they were mostly favorable, but I was worried that I wouldn't be able to relate as a caucasian adult. My worries were unfounded.

The story unfolded slowly at parts but there was always a purpose. I gave 4 stars because I was left wanting a little more at the ending of the book, but the story was mostly closed by the time the words stopped appearing on the pages. Dante and Ari were both interesting characters and I found parts of myself reflected in each of them. I highly suggest you read this book, especially if you enjoy LGBT fiction.

About the Author

Michael R. Solomon, Ph.D., is Professor of Marketing in the Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. Before joining the Saint Joseph’s faculty in the fall of 2006, he was the Human Sciences Professor of Consumer Behavior at Auburn University. Before moving to Auburn in 1995, he was chair of the Department of Marketing in the School of Business at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. Professor Solomon began his academic career in the Graduate School of Business Administration at New York University, where he also served as Associate Director of NYU’s Institute of Retail Management. He earned his B.A. degrees in psychology and sociology magna cum laude at Brandeis University and a Ph.D. in social psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1996 he was awarded the Fulbright/FLAD Chair in Market Globalization by the U.S. Fulbright Commission and the Government of Portugal, and he served as Distinguished Lecturer in Marketing at the Technical University of Lisbon. He held an appointment as Professor of Consumer Behaviour at The University of Manchester (U.K.) from 2007–2013.

 

Professor Solomon’s primary research interests include consumer behavior and lifestyle issues; branding strategy; the symbolic aspects of products; the psychology of fashion, decoration, and image; services marketing; marketing in virtual worlds; and the development of visually oriented online research methodologies. He has published numerous articles on these and related topics in academic journals, and he has delivered invited lectures on these subjects in Europe, Australia, Asia, and Latin America. His research has been funded by the American Academy of Advertising, the American Marketing Association, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the International Council of Shopping Centers, and the U.S. Department of Commerce. He currently sits on the editorial or advisory boards of The Journal of Consumer Behaviour, Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, Critical Studies in Fashion and Beauty, and Journal for Advancement of Marketing Education, and he served an elected six-year term on the Board of Governors of the Academy of Marketing Science. Professor Solomon has been recognized as one of the 15 most widely cited scholars in the academic behavioral sciences/fashion literature, and as one of the 10 most productive scholars in the field of advertising and marketing communications.

 

Professor Solomon is a frequent contributor to mass media. His feature articles have appeared in such magazines as Psychology Today, Gentleman’s Quarterly, and Savvy. He has been quoted in numerous national magazines and newspapers, including Allure, Elle, Glamour, Mademoiselle, Mirabella, Newsweek, the New York Times, Self, USA Today, and the Wall Street Journal. He frequently appears on television and speaks on radio to comment on consumer behavior issues, including appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, Inside Edition, Newsweek on the Air, the Entrepreneur Sales and Marketing Show, CNBC, Channel One, the Wall Street Journal Radio Network, the WOR Radio Network, and National Public Radio. He acts as consultant to numerous companies on consumer behavior and marketing strategy issues and often speaks to business groups throughout the United States and overseas. In addition to this text, Professor Solomon is co-author of the widely used textbook Marketing: Real People, Real Choices. He has three children, Amanda, Zachary, and Alexandra; a son-in-law, Orly; and three granddaughters, Rose, Evey, and Arya. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife Gail and their “other child,” a pug named Kelbie Rae.
