The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, by Sloan Wilson

Universally acclaimed when first published in 1955, The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit captured the mood of a generation. Its title — like Catch-22 and Fahrenheit 451 — has become a part of America's cultural vocabulary. Tom Rath doesn't want anything extraordinary out of life: just a decent home, enough money to support his family, and a career that won't crush his spirit. After returning from World War II, he takes a PR job at a television network. It is inane, dehumanizing work. But when a series of personal crises force him to reexamine his priorities — and take responsibility for his past — he is finally moved to carve out an identity for himself. This is Sloan Wilson's searing indictment of a society that had just begun to lose touch with its citizens. The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit is a classic of American literature and the basis of the award-winning film starring Gregory Peck. "A consequential novel." — Saturday Review

From Publishers Weekly
Though it's cited in nearly every book and article about the culture of the 1950s, few readers under 65 know Sloan Wilson's The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit firsthand. The 1955 bestseller is being reissued with a new introduction by Jonathan Franzen-and, indeed, the story of disappointed Westport, Conn., strivers Tom and Betsy Rath anticipates the novels of suburban anomie by Franzen and his contemporaries. Dreaming of a bigger house for his wife and three kids, WWII veteran Tom leaves his job with an arts foundation to be a well-paid public relations executive at the United Broadcasting Corporation. But corporate ladder climbing and consumer rewards leave him miserable. Though his sentimental conclusion now seems dated, Wilson's portrait of the martini-soaked malcontents is sharp, memorable and still resonant today.

Review
"The writing is vigorous, unvarnished, tartly observant; its overhanging disquietude isn't dated - if anything, it's deepened." - Los Angeles Times Book Review

An excellent read...
By John Paul Sassone
Published in 1955 The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit is an interesting look back at the 1950s and the way consumerism, work, the striving for always more and always better, took over the mindset of Americans after WWII. Tom Rath is the typical returned vet, a wife, three kids, a house in the suberbs and a job he tolerates because of the paycheck. When he has a chance to move to a different company for him the move just means more money, not really any type of fulfillment. Tom and his wife want a better house, a new car, better schools for the kids, all the things you're supposed to want. For tom to get them he has to sell his soul to his new employer, a workaholic who doesn't know his family and has no ties to anyone but his secretary and his two right hand men. Tom does his job, not knowing what it really is but hoping to keep his head above water at work in order to keep his paycheck coming in. As the 50s turn into the 60s the tone of the book changes. Money and possessions are no longer the most important thing and Tom begins to realize and finally accepts the idea quality of life is more important that the quantity of things toy can buy. This book, along with Peyton Place, provide great insights to the mindset of American culture in the 1950s.

A Good Story!
By Jody G.
This was a surprisingly good story! It really gave a sense of how men felt after World War II returning to regular home life and the women that married them.

The main character has an interesting division of his personality. On the one hand he wants to earn more money to enjoy his life, wife and children and focus on the the pleasure he feels with them. However, he also experiences the daily pressure of business encouraging him to give up any outside life and dedicate all his energies to work so he can succeed.

Good Entertainment, It focuses on success in life, in contrast to success as an end unto itself.
By The Old Pirate
Although "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" is definitely reflective of the 1950's and the advertising/public relations business throughout much of the 1960's, its theme of the conflict between choosing to balance one's work with family obligations and demands against a total immersion in one's career, transcends the period in which it is set. It also contains the situation many individuals face in returning from war of trying to intergrate themselves back into a society, which does not comprehend the life and death experiences they survived. Finally, it emphasizes honestly and intregrity as opposed to blindly becoming a "Yes Man," even though this may be promoted as the path to advancement. It is a good story and those who have seen the movie version with Gregory Peck will observe that it does not stray too far from this book.
